Tamils in Finance is a network of Canadian Tamil executives and emerging leaders in investment management, commercial and retail banking, sales and trading, risk management, private equity, venture capital, and other financial sectors. Our goal is to provide our members with a unique opportunity to mentor and support each other, purposefully grow their professional networks, and increase the collective influence of Tamils in Canada’s financial services sector.
Associate Partner, Ernst & Young LLP
Ilangko is an Associate Partner at Ernst & Young LLP where he is responsible for providing assurance services to clients in the financial services industry. Prior to E&Y Canada, he worked as an E&Y seconded employee at several banks in the Maldives, Kuwait, and New York, United States and was also previously at KPMG Sri Lanka. Ilangko is very involved in the broader community as President of the Canadian Tamil Congress, President of the Stouffville Multicultural Association, Co-founder of the Centre for Leadership and Innovation, and as Director of Tamil Chair Inc. and Tamil Literary Garden.
Founder, Northstar Trading
Bahi is an investment professional who founded Northstar Trading, a proprietary trading company focused on North American electricity markets. He is a well-regarded early stage tech investor with startups in the financial, real estate, education, and environmental sectors. Bahi also actively gives back to community as Director of Finance at comdu.it and is a Co-founder of the Tamil Entrepreneurs Organization. He is a CFA charterholder, has a Ph.D. in Finance from the EDHEC Business School, and a Masters in Mathematical Finance and a B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science from the University of Toronto.
Vice President, Institutional Investments, CI Financial
Akilan leads the marketing and business development support team at CI Institutional Asset Management (CIIAM). He works directly with the President of CIIAM to build, drive, and execute on the overall marketing and sales strategy for CI’s institutional sales business. Prior to joining CI, he spent five years at Invesco where he held roles primarily in product management, research & development, and servicing institutional and retail investors. Akilan has a B.Comm. from Ryerson University, a Master of Finance from Smith School of Business at Queen’s University and is a CFA charterholder.
Chief Executive Officer, Konnect Communications
Kumaran has nearly 15 years of experience in strategic communications in the financial services, legal, education, government, and non-profit sectors. Kumaran is an active community animator in Canada and abroad and has seeded several strategic initiatives aimed at building long-term capacity of the Canadian Tamil community, including as Founding Chair of comdu.it, Co-founder of the Tamil Entrepreneurs Organisation, and Co-convener of the Tamils in Public Service Network to name a few. He has a B.A. (Hons.) in English and Psychology from the University of Toronto and an Executive Certificate in Strategic Public Management from York’s Schulich School of Business.
Executive Vice President and Head of Sales, CI Financial
Roy is the Executive Vice-President of Sales and Marketing and National Sales Manager of CI Investments. He directs CI’s retail sales team across Canada as well as the development of sales strategies and initiatives that make use of CI’s diverse lineup of investment products. He has over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry. Roy received his undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto. He has completed level I of the CFA program, and is pursuing the M.B.A. program in Global Asset and Wealth Management at Simon Fraser University.
Associate Vice President, Digital – Innovation, Transformation and Partnerships, TD
Baanu has over 10 years of experience in the payments space and most notably lead the launch of the first cloud-based mobile wallet in Canada. She is currently focused on digital innovation, transformation and ecosystem partnerships to support The Bank of the Future initiatives at TD. Prior to TD, Baanu worked for RBC and spent several years at Deloitte, consulting for North American FIs. She has an M.B.A. from Queen’s School of Business and a B.A.Sc. (Hons.) in Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo.
Vice President, Equity Derivatives, BMO Capital Markets
Duwi has spent the last 10 years working in the Capital Markets, predominantly in Equity Derivative Sales & Trading at BMO Capital Markets. Prior to her current role, Duwi completed the Sales & Trading Rotation program at BMO and worked across several trading desks including Foreign Exchange, High Yield and Convertible Bonds. She completed the Jeffrey Skoll B.A.Sc. /M.B.A. program offered jointly by the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Duwi is a Women in Capital Markets Heather L. Main Award recipient.
