To me being Tamil in finance means acknowledging and being grateful for the privilege and opportunity my parents have given me through their endless sacrifices. The risk my parents took coming from Sri Lanka to Canada as refugees has provided me the base to receive higher education and the ability to take on a job in an industry that interests and engages me. Being a first-generation Canadian and Tamil in finance for me means finding ways to provide the same opportunity of social mobility growth to individuals who do not have them have accessible.

TiF’s mentorship program allowed me to connect with likeminded senior professionals in the Tamil community. Over the 6-month formal mentorship period my mentor and I engaged on various topics. Overall my mentor continues to be a strong sounding board to me to discuss career advice, business ideas and even on less professional topics such as interesting books or podcasts we’re both reading or listening to.

The work TiF does helps tremendously in leveling the playing the field for racialized and first-generation individuals like myself. Many of our parents and families in the Tamil community took the largest risk of their lives by escaping a war-stricken country to move to a country in hope of better opportunity. TiF allows us to accelerate our opportunities, personal growth and capabilities in developing a network by helping individuals find those connections within our own community. TiF’s work has helped me connect with like-minded individuals not only based on interests and career goals but also through a shared sense of identity and community.
